Karachi, Pakistan's largest and most populous city, presents an interesting and colourful combination of the old and new. The National Stadium became Karachi's fifth and Pakistan's 11th first-class ground. The inaugural first-class match was played at NSK between Pakistan and India on April 21-24, 1955, and it became a fortress of Pakistan cricket. In 34 Tests between that first match and December 2000, Pakistan won 17 and were never beaten. Their only Test defeat on the ground came in the gloom against England in 2000-01. Since then, major terrorist activity, mainly bombings, have meant that non Asian sides have refused to play in the city, and in five years only Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have visited. It is a shame because the spectators are passionate - and noisy - and it is a great place to play and watch.

The first ODI at the National Stadium was against West Indies on November 21, 1980, and it went down to the last ball as Gordon Greenidge drove Imran imperiously to the cover boundary with three needed. It has been a far less successful limited-overs venue, with defeats outnumbering victories. In fact, in a little under five years from the start of 1996, Pakistan failed to win on the ground. It also staged a quarter-final match in the 1996-97 World Cup.

Islamabad United will be looking to make a winning start to the season as the Karachi Kings host them on Thursday at National Stadium in Karachi.

Karachi’s opening match, played against the Peshawar Zalmi, was a high-scoring encounter where Karachi fell achingly short of the target. Chasing a mammoth 200 to win, Karachi was 4 wickets down with just 46 runs on the board. However, Shoaib Malik and captain Imad Wasim put up a brilliant partnership of 131 runs to get their team within touching distance of victory. However, the Zalmi bowlers held their nerve right till the end to deny the hosts a famous win, as they fell short by just 2 runs. The Karachi Kings will be banking on Matthew Wade to give them a good start, while Haider Ali and Qasim Akram will be expected to score runs in the middle order.The bowling looks good with the presence of Andrew Tye and Mohammad Amir in the seam department, while Imran Tahir will head the spin department

Led by Shadab Khan, Islamabad United has one of the strongest batting line-ups in the PSL. Alex Hales will be playing for the franchise for a fifth season and the team will be having high hopes for him after seeing his recent exploits in the ILT20.e is likely to be joined by Paul Stirling at the top of the order, while Asif Ali, Rassie van der Dussen, and Azam Khan will lend strength to the middle order.Islamabad United have two excellent all-rounders in the form of Moeen Ali and Tom Curran and will be banking on them to put up some match-winning performances with the bat as well as the ball. However, Moeen Ali is expected to join the squad only in the later half of the season.

The National Stadium in Karachi has an excellent track to bat on and has hosted quite a few high-scoring matches in the past. The Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi will open their 2023 PSL season's against each other. Both teams have made some key changes to their lineups and will be led by different captains from last season. The Karachi Kings let go of Babar Azam while Peshawar Zalmi let go of Shoaib Malik. It would be fair to say it would be a contest between Veteran Shoaib Malik and Babar Azam .

The Karachi Kings have parted ways with Babar Azam and replaced him with Shoaib Malik. While we continue to rate Malik very highly as a middle-order striker, he is well past 40 and age is catching up. The batting lineup for the Karachi Kings seems a bit thin. James Vince is the other opener for the Kings and is making quite a reputation for himself on the T20 circuit. He comes into this match after having led the Gulf Giants to victory in the IL T20 and with a boatload of runs to his name. Haider Ali, Matthew Wade, Shoaib Malik, and perhaps Ben Cutting could be the other players in the lineup. A decent batting lineup but not one that screams excellence in any sense. Bowling lineup also consists of Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim both being in top form in BPL 2023 . Tabrez shamsi has also been bowling well in this form of cricket.

Peshawar Zalmi has an excellent record in PSL history. It has always managed to make the PSL Playoffs in every single season so far. With Babar Azam added to its team, and the new captain, the team looks stronger than before. Babar Azam is going to be pushed into playing a more aggressive brand of cricket for sure. Speaking power, Peshawar Zalmi has Sherfane Rutherford, Rovman Powell, Mohammad Haris, Saim Ayub, and Bhanuka Rajapaksa in its squadThe bowling attack for Peshawar Zalmi is a bit imbalanced. Wahab Riaz is the only real big name with Mujeeb ur Rahman for support. Arshad Iqbal, Usman Qadir, and Salman Irshad will have to provide the rest of the support to the bowling unit.

PITCH AND CONDITIONS

There is no rain forecast in Karachi but the humidity is high and so some dew is going to be present. The pitch is very flat and excellent for batting in Karachi. The average score batting first is nearly 190 although it is closer to 170 in the last two seasons.

We think this is likely to be a high-scoring match with a lot of fours and boundaries.
